Join us for the second event in the Legal Lab series, focusing on one of the most contested and unresolved issues in UK law: the Assisted Dying Bill currently being debated in Parliament.
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill would allow terminally ill adults in England and Wales to request lawful assistance to end their lives, subject to safeguards. Having passed the House of Commons, the Bill is currently in committee stage in the House of Lords, where it has attracted over 1,000 amendments and sharp disagreement over its scope, safeguards, and implications for healthcare.
This session brings together a range of stakeholders including legal experts, academics, advocacy groups, and medical professionals to critically engage with the implications of this debate across differing perspectives.
Through a panel discussion followed by expert-led breakout roundtables, you will work directly with specialists to consider what the ideal trajectory of the law should be.
Our panellists:
Baroness Finlay of Llandaff: Professor of Palliative Medicine at Cardiff University, former President of the BMA, and crossbench member of the House of Lords. Baroness Finlay is one of the most prominent parliamentary voices on end-of-life care and has tabled key amendments to the Bill in the Lords.
Dr Stevie Martin: Lecturer in Public Law at the University of Cambridge and author of Assisted Suicide and the European Convention on Human Rights. Dr Martin's research examines the human rights implications of the ban on assisted suicide under the ECHR.
Dr Annabel Price: Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist at Addenbrooke's Hospital and College Lead for the Bill at the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Dr Price's work focuses on mental capacity assessment in the context of assisted dying.
Dr Graham Winyard CBE: Former Medical Director of the NHS and Co-Chair of the Clinical Advisory Group at My Death, My Decision. Dr Winyard has campaigned for a change in the law following personal experience of end-of-life suffering.
Dr Jamilla Hussain: Palliative Care Consultant and NIHR Research Fellow whose work examines inequalities in end-of-life care across race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic deprivation.
This event is free and open to the public. See you there!
