The Rt Hon Lord Kinnock led the Labour Party from 1983 to 1992, taking over after its heaviest general election defeat in half a century and beginning the long work of rebuilding it.
He is remembered above all for confronting the hard left of his own party, most famously in a 1985 conference speech attacking the conduct of the Militant tendency, one of the defining moments of modern British political oratory.
Though he lost the general elections of 1987 and 1992, the modernisation he began is widely credited with laying the ground for Labour's return to government in 1997.
He went on to serve as a European Commissioner, and later as Vice-President of the European Commission, before taking his seat in the House of Lords in 2005.
He joins the Holborn Union to reflect on leadership, opposition, and a lifetime in the Labour movement
